There is some scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of certain complementary and alternate therapies. However, there is very little or no evidence for others. What is anxiety?
All of us experience anxiety from one time to another. This can be a positive thing, as it helps us focus on relationships, work stress, and the financial issues that we have to face. Anxiety can be motivating and encourage us to give our best effort in our social, professional, and recreational activities. It is not a good thing when anxiety or stress becomes too strong or persistent to be a problem in our daily lives. This is a sign of a disorder. This indicates a possible disorder.
What are anxiety disorders?
An anxiety disorder is characterized by persistent, excessive nervousness, fear, and worry, or stress. You may feel ill, have a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, and sweat. These symptoms can recur over several weeks or months. There are many disorders, from mild to severe.
There are many types of anxiety disorders
- A condition is known as a generalized anxiety disorder. This is a condition where the individual experiences constant, excessive, and/or unreasonable worries all the time. Stress can be caused by even small daily responsibilities like paying bills.
- Specific Phobias are extreme, irrational fear of certain objects or situations. Fear of flying, dogs, or driving, for example.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD: This is a condition where repetitive, compulsive behaviors such as foot-tapping and repeating words are used to maintain calm.
- Social Anxiety – This is when there is a risk of being judged.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD, is often triggered after a major traumatic event such as an assault or accident. It can cause disturbing memories, flashbacks, and nightmares as well as difficulty sleeping.

What are the causes of anxiety disorders?

- Psychotherapies: There are many psychotherapies. Specific therapies are tailored to each individual’s needs and behaviors. Talk therapies are also known as psychotherapies. They focus on the individual’s exploration of the root causes and develop coping and problem-solving skills that will help them better manage their condition. Psychotherapies are the best treatment because they encourage people to examine and deal with their anxiety.
- Medication: Although medication cannot cure the disorder, it can temporarily relieve symptoms and provide temporary relief while you are undergoing other treatments.
- These therapies can be used to treat some disorders. These therapies can be used in combination with medication or psychotherapy. These therapies include relaxation, yoga, massage therapy, and breathing techniques. Crystal therapy can be considered an alternative treatment (Marshall (2018); Beyond Blue 2021).
Can crystal therapy be used to manage anxiety?
Semi-precious and other crystals are believed to promote healing. They believe that energy imbalances can lead to mental and physical problems, such as stress and anxiety. These imbalances can be corrected by crystals. They interact with the body’s energy fields or Chakra. A crystal healing stone can be held in the hands or placed on the chakra points of the body during therapy sessions. The crystal releases positive energy into your body and negative energy, which can be associated with illness, flows out. This stone induces feelings that are peaceful, calm, and relaxation, and helps to restore balance and healing.
Crystals can have different properties. Some crystals are said to enhance physical well-being while others can support mental well-being. Clear quartz is thought to stimulate the immune system, while citrine is good for the heart and thyroid. while blue-lace agate can be used for panic attacks. Rose quartz, amethyst, black tourmaline, and agate are all crystals that can be helpful in stress and anxiety (Palermo 2017, Marshall 2018, 2018).
Can healing crystals be used to reduce anxiety?
Despite crystal healing becoming more popular, there is little evidence to support the idea that energy flows through the body cause diseases. There is no evidence that crystals can be used to treat specific ailments. Although crystals might induce relaxation, scientific evidence isn’t conclusive (Palermo 2017; Vyse 2013).
Research suggests that the therapy could induce a placebo effect. Plato is any treatment that appears to be real but doesn’t work. A placebo is a treatment that produces a positive effect. A person may feel less anxious or more relaxed after crystal therapy. However, there is no scientific evidence that this is due to the inherent characteristics of crystals (Harvard Medical School 2012; BetterHealth Channel,2021).
Christopher French, a psychologist, conducted one of the few studies that examined the placebo effect in crystal therapy. Eighty people were asked if they could meditate for five minutes with a crystal. Half of the participants received real quartz crystals, while the other half were given fakes they believed were real. Half of the participants were trained to feel any sensations such as warmth or tingling in the crystals before they began meditation. Participants were asked questions after the meditation to determine if they felt any effects. The placebo was reported to have the same effect as real crystals. Both groups reported feeling warmth in the hand and an increase in well-being. Participants who were primed felt stronger effects, regardless of whether the crystals they were holding had real crystals or placebo. Researchers concluded that crystal healing can make people feel more positive, but that there isn’t any scientific evidence that it has anything to do with the healing crystal properties. It was the placebo effect, according to French and Williams (1999).
Can crystal therapy be used to manage anxiety?
Although scientific evidence supports the effectiveness of healing crystals for anxiety, it does not necessarily mean that the therapy is ineffective. Scientists and doctors agree that the placebo effect exists. Researchers have identified physiological reactions to placebos. These include the release of endorphins and dopamine as well as natural painkillers. The placebo effect has been shown to reduce anxiety and boost the ability to cope. It could help manage anxiety disorders (Vyse 2013; Harvard Medical School, 202).
Although the therapy may reduce symptoms, it does not appear to address the underlying causes of the disorder. Professional literature indicates that effective management requires that these underlying issues are identified and addressed. Psychotherapies are often used in combination with medication and other therapies to manage anxiety and stress.
